19th century jappaned tallboy with tortoiseshell and brass finish and ormulu fittings

This was heavily water damaged during floods – the inlays were badly disturbed, the carcass was split and some of the brass inlays were lost.

We had to ensure that this piece was slowly and carefully dried out to stop further degradation of the inlays and to prevent additional splitting of the carcass.

We then stabilised the cracked and split wood, secured the tortoiseshell and brass inlay and obtained and replaced missing brass inlays. We attentively disguised the damage, re ebonised it and re-polished it to achieve the end result.
